Flickr’s New Photo Page: 5 Great Things You’d Notice & Love

in Tips & Tricks

A few weeks back, Flickr rolled out its new features specifically for the photo page. After exploring these updates for a solid two weeks, I have to say that I’m in love with them. These new updates are long overdue and make Flickr an even more user-friendly site to share and discover photos.

1.) Bigger is better

In the case of default photo previews, sometimes bigger is better. Flickr has increased the default size from 500 pixels to 640 pixels. Trust me, the extra 140 pixels do make a difference!

Before:

After:

2.) Keeping it simple

The old menu was just messy and distracting.

The new drop down menu is much more compact and stylish. There’s also a quick navigation toolbar on the top right.

If you’re browsing another user’s photos, the favorite button is much more obvious and accessible.

3.) Looks better on black

No longer do you need a third-party application to have your photo displayed on a black background. Simply click the magnify glass:

And voila! You can even start a slideshow to save you the effort of having to click the next button.

4.) Less clutter

No longer would you get lost in the bunch of information and clutter on the right hand side. Everything is now compact and finally the browse slide shows more than just two photos!

Before:

After:

The toolbar also has a more horizontal feel than a vertical, meaning less scrolling and making browsing much more pleasant.

Then: Now:

5.) The small, but important information

How many of you know about the Additional Information section? And if you have actually bothered to scroll down to find it, do you have a tough time processing the information?

With the new Flickr layout, there’s a focus on stuff like the camera used, stats and (especially) geo-tagging. These information are now more prominent being displayed on top.

So, what are your thoughts on the new Flickr photo page layout? Love it? Hate it? Anything else you wish to share?

I liked it too, however i liked the way you get the url in the past version, the share option here is good, just, is a little bit more complicated, get the URL.

I like it a lot. But I did hope they’d add a messageboard link in the sharing section. You know: [ url ] instead of .

I wish the lightbox was designed better, sure the black background is great but why not have it overlay on top? I’d rather not have it open a new location for whcih I have to click back to venture back over to the photostream to continue on my search for photographic awesomeness.

One thing I don’t like at all is that now is harder to keep the big sizes of a picture unbrowsable. I don’t want my pictures’ big size accessible for everyone and now you can get it even if you are not on my contact list.

It’s sloooow to load. I’ve seen other comments about this issue on Facebook and Twitter.

I just wish there was some space between photo & left hand side on the main page. I keep thinking I’m missing some of the image.

It looks great. And it’s good to see that Yahoo is still investing in improving Flickr. It shows it can at least do something right.

I like it. I think it’s as slow as it always was. For a while there was no padding whatsoever on the left side. I suggested they add some, as I’m sure a lot of other people did, and now there’s some breathing room. It will still take a little time to get used to but I think it’s an improvement overall.

The new features are brilliant. Well done Flickr. Next step would definitely be a need improving the speed of viewing the photos.
Another major improvement worth mentioning is the Flickr Mobile application. While viewing you photos, a new “edit” box, on the top right of iPhone/iPod touch screen, allows you to change title and caption, move the photo to different sets, add or remove tabs, change your public access and even delete the photo. GREAT!
Meanwhile, it seems that the application still does not increase the stats with the number of times you look at your contact’s photos.

Thanks everyone for your comments. Looks like the majority of feedback has been quite positive, but there’s still a stress for faster speed. This is definitely a long overdue update from Flickr, and I just hope they continue with the improvements in the very near future. 🙂

All good improvements granted, but as an Information Architect, I still find Flickr incredibly user unfriendly. There are none of the nice big, bold and clear calls to action, and the most common functionalities are still hidden away in drop downs or page clicks. For a site that is all about socialising and connecting, it’s shocking that there aren’t the simple updates that Facebook pioneered months and month ago. I regularly load up a lot of images – why can’t I see a simple micro tiled version of all the images? Flickr should be looking to include a much more robust interface along the lines of Picasa in my opinion.

I guess that means this is a Pirated software Office 2010 package! For whatever reason, probably marketing Outlook 2010 decisions, Microsoft changes the product Microsoft Office 2010 composition of its various Office editions from Microsoft Office version to version.
